Criteria for Gifted/Highly Gifted Magnet Programs and Schools for Advanced Studies
Applicants to the Kennedy Gifted Medical Magnet or School for Advanced Studies program must meet at a minimum one of three eligibility criteria:
- Student has been identified as gifted by a LAUSD designated GATE psychologist in an academic category.
- Student scored in the Standard Exceeded range on the 2023 SBAC in English Language Arts AND Math.
- Student’s current school verifies eligibility that the student demonstrates four critical thinking and problem-solving skills and the ability or strong potential to work two years above grade level.
Verification of Eligibility Process for Late Applications (Feb-Aug)
L.A. UNIFIED APPLICANTSThe student's CURRENT SCHOOL of attendance completes the verification of eligibility process.
Verification forms are NOT required for students currently enrolled in LAUSD (except LAUSD independent charter schools). For District applicants, this will involve communication between the two District schools (Gifted Magnet or SAS site AND student’s current school of attendance).
To expedite the process, please notify your school's GATE coordinator that you have a late application pending and request that they begin their internal approval process.

PRIVATE SCHOOL, INDEPENDENT CHARTER, AND NON-L.A. UNIFIED APPLICANTSIf/when a Gifted Magnet/SAS site contacts the late applicant about an available seat, verification must be provided at that time.
For non-district applicants, the parent/guardian must request that the non-district school complete the applicable Verification of Eligibility form and submit it directly via email to Kennedy's magnet coordinator Mandy Arentoft [email protected]

Verification of Eligibility Process for On Time Applications (Oct/Nov)
L.A. UNIFIED APPLICANTSVerification forms are NOT required for students currently enrolled in LAUSD (except LAUSD independent charter schools).
For District applicants, the student’s current school of attendance will complete the verification= of eligibility process in January and an eligibility letter will be sent out to parents on/around February 1, 2024.

PRIVATE SCHOOL, INDEPENDENT CHARTER, AND NON-L.A. UNIFIED APPLICANTSFor non-district applicants and students enrolled in LAUSD independent charter schools, the parent/guardian must request that the non-district school complete the applicable Verification of Eligibility form.
The verification of eligibility form MUST BE RECEIVED on or before November 18, 2023.
