The John F. Kennedy Teaching and Leadership Academy is dedicated to empowering today's students to be tomorrow's educators and leaders.

MISSION

 
The John F. Kennedy Teaching and Leadership Academy provides opportunities for our students to mentor and work with younger students in our local schools, our students improve our community, and learn the value of pride in the work they do for our school and for themselves.
 
Each pathway provides hands-on learning experiences that prepares students for entry-level employment or further study in college programs related to careers in early childhood education or secondary education.
 
Students in this program have the chance to learn about real-life applications of their chosen pathway from highly qualified professionals in a nurturing atmosphere that fosters academic and social growth by providing opportunities to collaborate and learn in a culturally rich and accepting environment.

COLLEGE & CAREER READY

Strand One: Early Childhood Education  Strand Two: Secondary Education Educators of Tomorrow (EOT)
The CTE approved Early Childhood Education pathway trains students to attend to children at schools, businesses, private households, and childcare institutions and perform a variety of tasks, such as dressing, feeding, bathing, and overseeing play. Students learn the developmental stages of children, including the major theories of development and their application. Focus is on emotional, psychological, cognitive, and physical development, and on the influence of heredity and environmental factors. Included are theories of multiple intelligence and current brain research.
 
This is a three year pathway beginning in 10th grade and culminating in the 12th grade capstone course, which focuses on the practical application of the skills and knowledge gained through a community internship at a local elementary school. These students will earn the California Mandated Reporter certification (AB1207) and have the opportunity to take the LAUSD Instructional assistant exams. Success on these exams qualify students for employment with LAUSD upon graduation. 
The Secondary Education pathway integrates career technical education with leadership in order to prepare students for college and careers in 7-12 schools.
 
The Secondary Education Pathway students have different options to choose from. Pathway students learn how to work with our special education population in a Peer Buddies program where they have the opportunity to become Special Education assistants upon graduation and passing the LAUSD exam or they can choose the Educational Leadership side of the program, which teaches management skills such as event planning and community outreach. Both of these options require critical thinking and problem solving.
 Educators of Tomorrow (EOT) is offered in partnership with the Career Ladder and Linked Learning for high school students in Education pathway programs and courses.  EOT assists students in preparing for and taking District employment exams prior to graduation to help them become career and college ready,  Upon graduation, EOT students are provided additional support in applying for job opportunities within LAUSD.
